"I want to learn Spanish,
I just don't know how to start"
Spanish TeleClasses: a new option?

By Natalia Cepeda

"I want to learn Spanish, I just don't know how to start". This has been one of the comments I've heard the most from friends and acquaintances every time I say I'm s Spanish teacher. "I wish I was bilingual" is another.

More than one in 10 people in the US is a native Spanish speaker and the interest to learn the language is increasing every day among Americans. This is reflected in phrases of concern such us " I've tried taking classes more than once", "It's too difficult for me and expensive", "I live too far from where the schools are".

This last comment reminds me of Jason, one of my students in the Intermediate Class who lived in New Hampshire. He dropped out on his third course with me, Intermediate II, right at the point when the students start feeling really comfortable expressing ideas in Spanish. Jason was a very good student but many times he looked really tired in class. I'd talk to him after class and at Spanish events and he'd tell me that besides being a student and having a part time job he had the stress of driving for two hours to attend class every week. This was making him feel frustrated.

Around that time, I had started taking some TeleClasses on different subjects, which proved to have a lot of value for me. What surprised me the most was the fact that I was really participating and that the instructor made us all feel so comfortable and close that it was like being in a classroom!

That's when we put everything together and decided to DO it: we'd start offering Spanish TeleClasses. I became a certified TeleLeader and prepared the Class program for Beginners Spanish TeleClasses.

Now students like Jason, who live too far, who don't have the time, or simply don't want the hassle and expense of commuting and parking, have the option of taking Spanish Classes from work or home. TeleClasses are for students from all around the world. They only need to dial a number, open their e-book and start conversing with their teacher and classmates.

At our school, we know this will benefit many students and that we can continue serving what has been our purpose for the last 15 years: to offer high quality classes and to help more people enjoy one of the most spoken languages in the world.

If you have also said: "I want to learn Spanish, I just don't know how to start", this is what you've been waiting for.
