Mis estudios de español

By Sandra Lyons

English version:

Except for a brief conversation class I had in 1963, I began to study Spanish in 1993, when we (my husband and I) lived in Cambridge, England. I found classes offered by CASA, an organization supporting people from Central America. My first teacher was from Nicaragua, which allowed me to learn the "vos" first person form. One of the aspects of the program that I liked the most was that it was two nights a week. I still prefer this system although I know it is difficult to maintain a steady attendance of students that work during the evening.

When my husband and I returned to Ithaca, NY, I was very happy to continue my studies. There was an organization similar to CASA in Ithaca, which also offered Spanish classes. In this case, my teacher was from Venezuela. She was an engineer in her native country, but also an excellent teacher for us. She hardly ever spoke English in class. She assigned a variety of homework, including grammar, readings and composition about different topics. In class, we would talk about culture and politics, listen to music and songs.I believe I received a very good foundation that allowed me to learn more.

During the six following years, living in Boston, I have studied with many teachers and at different schools including one in Australia. I am thankful that I met so many different classmates. They are very interesting people. Many of them had lived and worked in Spanish speaking countries. I met a woman in Boston who was 65 years old. She was a lawyer and participated in the Boston marathon every year! Others were nuns, social workers, teachers, musicians, a coupe of architects, Australian eye doctors who traveled to a different Hispanic country on their motorcycles every year.

My teachers have also been very interesting and have taught me with efficiency. They were from various countries: Colombia, Mexico, El Salvador, Spain, Costa Rica and, of course, Argentina.

I prefer small classes like the ones in HablEspaña, where I've been studying for more than a year now. But I think it is also possible to learn in a bigger class. In this case, the instructor needs to organize small groups of work.

I'm very happy with the instruction at HablEspaña. I also like the Language Partners Program a lot. It's a good idea to offer this program for free for HablEspaña students. The fiestas ( events organized by HablEspaña I attended were very nice and I hope they keep holding more of them.

Finally, I hope to be able to visit a Spanish speaking country in order to improve my fluency. I realize this is a long term project and it is not possible now, but maybe in the next two or three years I'll be able to do it.
